Drawing on semi-structured interviews with 15 young “weekend couples” in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen, and using grounded theory coding, this study examines how spatiotemporal constraints in megacities reshape same-city intimate relationships. The findings show that this relationship form does not indicate weakened emotional investment, but rather represents an adaptive arrangement shaped by the combined effects of housing costs, job-housing separation, cross-district commuting, long working hours, and risks associated with occupational mobility. Megacities amplify spatial, temporal, and emotional uncertainties, leading same-city romantic relationships to develop a pattern of “semi-long-distance separation on weekdays and concentrated compensation on weekends.” Young couples sustain relational continuity through “disembodied presence” during the workweek, “embodied compensation” on weekends, trust management, and the postponement of conflict, while forming an active compromise through the preservation of private space, the postponement of cohabitation, and low-binding relationship arrangements. The study suggests that the romantic and marital difficulties faced by young people should not be simply attributed to changes in values, but should be understood in relation to structural conditions such as housing costs, labor rhythms, job-housing structures, and urban life support.
