Taking county towns as important carriers is a major adjustment to the development direction of the new-type urbanization in China. Based on the panel data of cities at prefecture level and above from 2005 to 2019, this paper takes cities as the research subject to explore the impact of the promotion of county towns' carrier status on the new-type urbanization at the city level. It is found that the promotion of county towns' carrier status can significantly promote the new-type urbanization of cities, and this conclusion still holds after various robustness tests. The promotion of county towns' carrier status fosters the new-type urbanization of cities by enhancing population urbanization and environmental urbanization, but it does not advance industrial urbanization and facility urbanization. The promotion of county towns' carrier status can significantly foster the new-type urbanization of small and medium-sized cities and industrial cities, but has no significant impact on big cities and non-industrial cities. Based on the research conclusions, this paper puts forward some policy suggestions to steadily promote the new-type urbanization by taking the county towns of small and medium-sized cities and industrial cities as important carriers.
