Abstract

The relationship between urban spatial structure and PM2.5 concentrations are discussed by drawing upon the enterprise spatial distribution data from covering 35 large cities, combined with Lasso and OLS regression analysis models. The results show that the urban spatial structure characterized by the spatial distribution of enterprises is effective in reflecting the influence of spatial agglomeration of urban economic activities on PM2.5 concentrations. After controlling for the factors of urban socio-economic and natural environment, it is found that PM2.5 concentrations are lower in polycentric cities, and on the contrary, PM2.5 concentrations are higher in cities with more compact spatial structures. And the impact of urban spatial polycentric development on PM2.5 concentration is greater than that of urban spatial agglomeration. In general, lower-sized, scattered, polycentric cities provide better air quality in China. It is suggested that higher air quality and fewer pollutant emissions can be achieved through urban form planning and management policies, which aim to encourage moderately scattered, polycentric urban development.
